The planets have aligned in the SOG Aegis and a nearly perfect lightweight tactical and larger sized EDC blade has been created by SOG. It is no secret that I advocate LIGHTWEIGHT, well-built, fast deploying, solid folders that use good materials. Oh yeah, I want these knives to look cool, have a deep, tip-up pocket clip, and have an affordable price. It sounds like a lot to ask for but it really isn't. In this quest to promote these design criteria I haven't relented and indeed my high rating of the SOG Flash series knives is because they achieve many of these qualities so fully. Enter this Desert Digital model of SOG Aegis. Indeed this is the exact coloration I encouraged SOG to make (in the Flash series), of course utilizing the much more popular (and useful) plain edge which I also advocate. And of course, at least for now, they can't keep it in stock and it's a popular choice. In this Desert Digital coloration and with the black TiNi coated AUS-8, 3.5 blade, it is a striking knife for those who appreciate tactical items. But the looks would count for nothing if the design elements failed to deliver utility and possible defensive capabilities. From my study of the design, the Aegis should deliver on all accounts. The drop point blade offers a wickedly sharp tip while still offering plenty of belly for slash cuts. Add to this an auto-like assisted opening (love SOGs opening), outstanding subdued and DEEP pocket clip thats mounted on the correct end (tip up, reversible for sides; it sets the industry standard), nicely contoured ambidextrous thumb studs, logo imprinted rubber handle inserts, adjustable pivot, solid lockup, sharp blade jimping, strong and easy-to-use Arc-Lock mechanism (love these side lockers!), and the thankful absence of steel liners. And you get all of this at an amazingly svelte 3.4 oz weight. Moreover the Zytel handle is even slightly thinner than the Flash series and carries well indeed. The only downside would be the lack of a razor edge out of the box. But in every other respect SOG, especially in this blade type and coloration, has knocked one out of the park with the Aegis. It is a tactical and EDC homerun that will serve readily in any application you assign and few tactical or EDC folders achieve the "two kinds of cool" in such perfect harmony./////////////////////// Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 10 out of 10

January 7th, 2009 at 21:34:18 The outfitter where I work sells SOG. I EDC carry the Trident. It's outstanding and this one looks good but we cannot get it yet si I have to wait to test it. SOG is sold out. Keeping edge on the Trident has not been a problem--at least for me. Everyday, people come in and show me their beautiful knives. They are great, but when they handle the SOG for a bit, they buy them. Really great in the back country because it's so light, I don't mind carrying a RAT7 or my Bark River as well. Great review
January 7th, 2009 at 21:57:17 Nutn's current store of choice has the digicamo Aegis for $63. $63 for AUS8? Gimme a Benchmade Grip 551 in 154CM for the exact same price any day. I'd even take a Spyderco Endura in VG10 for $50ish over this. I've handled the Aegis, it's nice, but not worth the price imo.
January 7th, 2009 at 22:20:16 Love the Weight, Blade, Design, Pocket clip, and the Lock. Sweeeeeet
January 7th, 2009 at 22:43:15 Aegis (ee-jis), which in Greek means shield or protection

January 7th, 2009 at 23:29:13 i want one :(
January 8th, 2009 at 23:52:12 hmm... sexy. I wish SOG had more color variations in their Flashes and now this Aegis. If they had this aegis in Maybe a light olive or olive drab color... ooooooohhhh. I do agree the Flash II is still one of the best EDC blades ever. I just find myself NOT using my other blades that much because this one is adequately strong, I don't mind thrashing it because it's not 300$ and it's lightweight.

January 8th, 2009 at 02:56:04 I'm not choosing to limit myself to one hand, left is my only option.
January 8th, 2009 at 03:19:03 hey what about the blackhawk crucible 2?
January 8th, 2009 at 03:42:02 Why limit yourself with one hand? I try to do all things ambi. Brushing my teeth, shooting guns, holding hands with my SO, holding a knife. Provides greater flexibility and expands your comfort zone IMO.
January 8th, 2009 at 04:05:01 should make a vd showing all the knives you have i think that would be really cool how many do you have? after watching alot of your videos i found myself starting to collect knives
January 8th, 2009 at 04:28:00 another great review. These videos realy deliver; Nutnfancy realy is what you can call a passionate aficianado of knives, he knows what he's talking about and the way he makes these vids with structure, logic, to the point and start to finish interesting; sheer entertainment. I've grown to be a real fan

January 8th, 2009 at 05:36:57 hey man ...ya know what would be cool ,if you did a cold steel tommahawk review.
January 8th, 2009 at 05:59:56 Hey CUBuff10 they make left handed knifes but they are sold out in days to all the right handed knife collectors. Check Spyderco for sold out models.
January 8th, 2009 at 06:22:55 Why do companies constantly forget to make knives with a left-hand option? WHY WHY WHY!?!?!?!? This knife satisfies 99% of what I'm looking for, but no left-hand option, so I would never carry it, and that is after all the point. So yet another knife that I will leave in the case at the store.
January 8th, 2009 at 06:45:54 Agreed!
